Changing lives through the power of early education

In Rwanda, 98% of children enroll in primary school — but only 71% complete it. That gap is where futures are lost. Umuhoza Foundation exists to close it, connecting underprivileged children with exceptional primary schools where they gain the foundational skills that shape everything that follows.

Born from the understanding that Rwanda's post-genocide education rebuilding demands bold, early action, we work alongside families and communities to remove the barriers — school fees, uniforms, materials, and meals — that keep children from the classrooms where they belong. Because when a child thrives in primary school, the ripple effect transforms families, communities, and a nation.

Why primary school is the critical window

Nobel laureate James Heckman's research proves that early education investment yields the highest returns — 13% per year for disadvantaged children. In Rwanda, where 62 students share one qualified teacher, quality primary school is the single most powerful lever for change.

01

The Foundation of Literacy

Children who cannot read proficiently by grade 3 are four times more likely to drop out of high school. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 90% of 10-year-olds are in "learning poverty" — unable to read and understand a simple text. Rwanda's language transition from Kinyarwanda to English in grade 4 makes strong early literacy even more critical.

02

Where the Drop-off Begins

Only 13% of the poorest children in Sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school, compared to 70% of the wealthiest. The gap opens during primary school and widens irreversibly. In Rwanda, nearly 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, and one-third of children under five suffer chronic malnutrition — entering school already behind.

03

Highest Return on Investment

The World Bank estimates each additional year of quality schooling raises lifetime earnings by 8–10% — and even higher in Sub-Saharan Africa at 12%. A high-quality primary teacher increases a student's lifetime earnings by approximately $50,000. Every dollar invested early returns $7–12 over a lifetime.
